Mud fever typically occurs during winter and causes sores & scabs, usually in the pastern and heel area (although can be seen higher up legs and under the belly).

These are our top tips for prevention and management:
  • Allow your horse time away from the wet & mud, either in a stable or a dry area of the field
  • Rotate paddocks where possible and use electric fencing to prevent horses standing in deep areas (typically seen by gateways)
  • Allow the mud to try on the horse, and then brush it off
  • If you must wash your horse’s legs, ensure you dry them thoroughly
  • Apply a barrier cream to protect the leg from the mud (like Nettex Muddy Marvel)
  • Use turnout boots to keep your horse’s legs dry and clean (we rate the Equilibrium chaps)
  • If you see scabs, use an antibacterial cream (and ensure the leg is kept clean and dry), if symptoms persist contact your vet
