Improve Your Ride With Polework

Try some of these pole exercises to give your schooling session some structure and work on rhythm, straightness, suppleness, engagement and balance!

Centre Line Circles
This is a really easy exercise to set out with just 3 poles, and really helps you think about your rhythm & balance. You can do it in walk, trot, or canter, and mix it up between going straight or circling over the pole, and you can even include transitions to take it to the next level!
The 2 U's
Work on your suppleness and straightness with this exercise! There are so many different ways to ride this so your horse doesn't anticipate where you're going.
The Clover
This is a great test for your accuracy, both on the straight and on the circles. Start this one in walk and make sure your horse is really bending before you change pace! Keep an eye out for rushing or drifting, and aim for the very centre of each pole!
The Compass
This one might look a bit crazy, but it is a great exercise for working on rhythm and suppleness. Ride in walk trot or canter, and work on trying to get an even number of strides between each pole. Make it harder by coming closer to the centre when you're established!

Pole work can be a great addition to your schooling sessions, keeping things exciting for both you and your horse, and really making the most of your Winter training. All of these exercises can be made more difficult by raising either one or both ends of the poles.
