Managing the Springtime Spooky Horse

We all know horses that have a real objection to the 'spooky corner' in the arena or are a bit fruity out hacking (especially this time of year!)

Here are a few simple tips that might help you through the 'Spring Sillies'!

Feeding:

Don't overfeed for the amount of work the horse is doing - is it really in hard work or only moderate or light?

Minimise sugar & starch - these are quick release energy sources, check the levels on your feed bag

Ensure plenty of forage and fibre to keep their digestive system happy - if your horse is a good doer consider a slow-feeder to ensure they always have hay in their system

Keep the diet balanced -consider adding a vitamin and mineral supplementor feed balancer
Management:

Try a calmer - although every horse is different, we have plenty to chose from on the Farm & Country website - shop calmers

Consider if your horse might benefit from increased turnout - time spent away from the stable may help them to chill out

When riding think about your own breathing and consider having lessons with an experienced trainer to prevent the situation escalating.

Remember to make any dietary or lifestyle changes slowly and carefully over a period of time to avoid gastric upset.

Shop calmers.
