5 Top Tips For Your Yard Spring Clean

(And all the products you need for the job!)

The lighter evenings are finally upon us, horses are starting to spend more time in the field, and it hasn’t rained for a while, which means this might be the perfect time to give your yard a little spring clean makeover! Here are a few of our top tips and the right tools for the job to help you get your yard spick and span so you can get back to enjoying your horse in the sun.

Stable Sort:

It’s probably fair to say your horse’s stable could do with a bit of TLC this Spring to ensure it is a happy and healthy environment for them! Although it’s tempting to clean the rubber mats while they’re in the stable, best practice is remove all bedding, matting, buckets and stable toys. Ensure you give the whole stable a really good sweep out, remove all the cobwebs and use a dustpan and brush to get right into the corners, then use either a jet wash or hose with disinfectant and give it a good scrub; here are some of our favourite stable disinfectants. You’ll have to individually scrub each of the rubber mats clean using the same technique (be warned, it’s not the most pleasant job!), make sure you’ve let your stable fully dry before you contemplate repainting or putting your mats and bedding back in, then it is job done!

Repair & Upgrade:

While the weather is slightly better, it’s a good time to check around your yard for any repairs. Key areas we suggest checking are stable roof, water tap fixtures and hosepipes, door locks and kick-bolts, and gutters (it’s a good idea to routinely clear these out to allow rainwater to drain properly). Unravelling and rerolling your electric fencing is a great job to do this time of year, as well as stock up on insulators, handles, tape, energisers, batteries and posts – all available on our website.

Tack Room Tidy:

From sweeping out the tack room, to checking for any damage, to just giving it a deep clean – looking after your tack and the room it lives in is a worthwhile, but time-consuming activity. Have a look through all your items and consider how much you actually use and if any of it can be sold or donated to create some room. Saddle stands and bridle hooks can help keep your tack tidy and clean. When you clean and condition your tack, make sure you check things like your stitching on your girth and look for signs of damage on your bit; take a look at some of our leather care here.

Rugs:

As with your tack, have a sort out and consider which rugs are no longer needed, and send those that need repair to your local rug cleaning specialist. We stock a range of rug reproofing spray as well as rug cleaners and wash bags if you decide to wash your rugs at home.

First Aid Kit:

Injury or illness can occur at any time, so having a stocked first aid kit on hand is vital. It’s not unusual to have used bits of your first aid kit throughout the year such as poultice equipment, wound cream or cohesive bandage. Make sure you restock your first aid kit in your yard spring clean so that everything is there in case you need it; shop online now.

Spending a few hours getting your yard in order means you can enjoy the rest of Summer with your horses!
