5 Things You Need To Do On The Yard This Spring

And our top picks for products that make the job easier

With the lighter evenings finally upon us, competition season starting to get in full swing, and slightly less rain, it’s time to give your yard a good Spring clean and sort!

Here are 5 jobs to get done on the yard before Summer gets underway

Start in the Stable

After a long Winter with lots of time in the stable, it’s probably time to give it a deep clean to ensure it remains a healthy environment for your horse! If your stable has rubber matting, its best practice to remove it, along with all bedding, buckets, stable toys and hay nets/mangers. Ensure you sweep the stable thoroughly and remove any cobwebs, before getting started with the hose or jetwash and some horse-safe stable disinfectant. Spray and scrub your mats using a broom or hard-bristled brush along with the disinfectant and allow them (and the stable floor) to fully dry before putting them back in.

Repair and Replace

Make note of everywhere around the yard that needs repairs – things like the stable roof, tap fixtures, door locks and kick bolts. When did you last check for rotten fence posts, or clear out your gutters? Unravelling and rerolling your electric fencing is a great job to do this time of year, as well as stock up on insulators, handles, tape, energisers, batteries and posts – all available on our website.

Get the Tack Room in Check

Looking after your tack is vital to ensure its safety and longevity – make sure you check the quality of the stitching on your girth and bridle, look for any signs of damage on the bit, and keep an eye out for wear and tear on your stirrup leathers, before giving it a thorough clean and condition; here’s our favourite leather-care. Consider selling any bits of tack you don’t need to create some space in the tack room, and then organise your tack with saddle stands & bridle hooks.

First Aid Restock

Injury or illness can occur at any time, so having a stocked first aid kit on hand is vital. It’s not unusual to have used bits of your first aid kit throughout the year such as poultice equipment, wound cream or cohesive bandage. Make sure you restock your first aid kit in your yard spring clean so that everything is there in case you need it; shop online now.

Rug Refresh

Have a think about which rugs you no longer need and could sell, and have a sort out to send those which are really need of a repair or wash and reproof to a local rug specialist. We stock a range of rug reproofing spray as well as rug cleaners and wash bags if you decide to wash your rugs at home.

Bring on the Summer

Once your yard is in order, you’ll be ready to enjoy a Summer of hopefully lovely weather with your horse. Make sure you’re up to date with all that horse ‘admin’ like the dentist, vaccinations, their diet plan, and their saddle-fit so there’s nothing stopping you enjoying the months ahead!

Spending a few hours getting your yard in order means you can enjoy the rest of Summer with your horses!
